On April 1st, 2009, April Fools Day, the largest tax increase on cigarettes took effect. The per pack tax went from .39 cents to $1.01. You can believe that anytime the government says they are putting forth policy to help people, they are really doing it for the benefit (and funding) of themselves as an entity. Follow the money!! That being said I am glad this tax is on cigarettes and not gas. These days, due to poor city-state planning driving for many is a necessity. On the other hand cigarettes are and will always be (a smelly, deadly) luxury.
